Who you are and why are you doing this?

INVI began as an initiative of people who believe that domestic and family violence cannot be addressed only through the consequences of individual cases.

Some members of our initiative have personally encountered this problem, which made us look beyond individual stories and ask a broader question: what is missing in the way domestic and family violence is recorded, understood and addressed?

There are already many important initiatives providing direct support — shelters, psychological assistance, legal aid and other services. We do not want to duplicate this work.

Instead, we want to approach the problem from a systemic perspective. We began by looking at existing statistics and the way information about domestic and family violence is recorded across different systems. This led us to identify gaps that make it difficult to see connections between episodes, their repetition and their dynamics.

From this work, the idea for INVI was born: a research and technology initiative focused on developing a methodology and technical solution that could help create a more complete and comparable picture of domestic and family violence.

We are starting with research, but our goal is to turn what we learn into a practical solution that can contribute to better prevention, response and decision-making.

About this project

Our initiative aims to develop and test a new approach to understanding domestic and family violence through the use of statistical data.

Today, information about domestic and family violence is often recorded in different systems and in different ways. Individual incidents may be counted, but it can be difficult to see the connections between them, how often violence is repeated, how patterns develop, and what is happening over time. As a result, the overall picture remains incomplete.

We approach this problem systemically. The project will be developed in three stages:

stage 1 — Research
We will study existing statistical data and approaches in several European countries to identify common gaps and limitations in the way domestic and family violence is recorded, beyond the specific practices of any one country or institution.

stage   — Methodology
Based on the research, we will develop a methodology for bringing information from different sources into a comparable framework and exploring connections, repetition and dynamics.

stage 3 — Technical Solution & Pilot
The results of the first two stages will form the basis for a technical solution that can be integrated with existing systems at different levels — from individual institutions and NGOs to national statistical systems.

Data Protection & Security

Protection of personal data is a fundamental principle of INVI. The technical solution is intended for statistical analytics, and data will enter the INVI system only in a form that does not reveal personal identities.

The goal is not to replace existing support services or duplicate the work of organizations already helping people affected by domestic and family violence. The project focuses on another part of the problem: creating a better statistical and analytical foundation for prevention, response and informed decision-making.

Project Base & Collaboration

INVI will be based in Greece and developed as an international initiative.

The project will involve research institutions, NGOs and other relevant organizations from different European countries. We are currently looking for institutional and research partners interested in contributing to the development and future testing of the methodology and technical solution.

The initiative is being established as a non-governmental, non-profit organization in Greece and is open to international research and institutional collaboration.

Risks and challenges

Developing a new approach to a complex social problem inevitably involves challenges. One of the main challenges is bringing diverse statistical data, collected using different methods and standards, into a common and comparable framework.

The project is structured so that each stage creates the foundation for the next one, allowing the methodology and technical solution to be tested and refined step by step.

We understand that implementing the technical solution at a national or European level may require substantial organizational work and take considerable time. At the same time, once the pilot has been tested, the technical solution can already be integrated with interested institutions and systems, creating opportunities for practical application from an early stage.

In the longer term, our ambition is to contribute to a more comparable European statistical picture of domestic and family violence.
