Local legend DJ Derek's memorial mural was painted over. We are fundraising the time and materials for local artists to create another fitting tribute

IMPORTANT UPDATE: PLEASE READ BEFORE BACKING

Hi lovely fundsurfers! We have an exciting and important update for friends and supporters of DJ Derek's legacy. Whilst we were happily squirreling away putting together this fundsurfer, unbeknownst to us, friends and family of DJ Derek have been working incredibly hard to put together super-exciting plans for a whole raft of tributes to Derek - we don't want to give away too much but we know it will feature a lot of love and another mural!

With such exciting plans in the works we definitely don't want to split the focus of the fundraising so we've decided to combine our efforts! What this means is that this fundsurfer will be suspended with all of the supporters receiving their awards as planned. The money that's already been raised will be used to purchase materials for the new mural.

We'll be sure to shout about the full fundraiser when it launches so please show them the love of this community!

About us:

PRSC, based around our Jamaica Street premises, has been promoting and facilitating grass roots local culture for over a decade. We run small art and community projects in Stokes Croft and around Bristol, often for free. We collaborate with other art and community groups, who benefit from our facilities and resources.

From fighting for local retailers and reclaiming and promoting public space to running art fairs and homeless support services we exist for, and by the efforts of, the local community.

And now we need YOU to help us remember a very Bristol hero.

About The DJ Derek Memorial Mural:

DJ Derek is a local legend. From nightclubs to festivals he became one of more unlikely faces of reggae, ska, rocksteady, dancehall and R&B in Bristol. But what he really showed us was the real spirit of Bristol - everyone welcome, now let's get on it!

After a tragic end, the up-swell of feeling for Derek saw art and writing produced from all corners of the city inspired by the man. The largest of the pieces was a beautiful mural painted in Montpelier which for a few years served as fitting tribute to such a well-loved figure.

To the dismay of the community, late last year essential building work on the property meant that the mural sadly needed to be painted over. Obviously this is a situation that needs rectifying, so we’re raising funds to put together a crew and make sure that DJ Derek lives as long in the visual landscape of the city as he does in the hearts of those whose feet he got moving.

We can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to repaint the mural in the same location but there are a number of other locations on the shortlist that are sure to give Derek's mural the impact it deserves.

Any additional funds raised by the project will go towards commissioning artists to create more community artwork. Prints of the new mural will also be available, the sales of which will go towards even more incredible public art! You can see where we’re going with this, and how you can help!

Take a look at the prints we made of past works remembering DJ Derek to get a feel of how we will use local artists to build a true reminder of someone very unique to our city... and help us to be able to make this happen!

Rewards on offer

Any amount you have to donate will help us in making the new mural a reality. If you can support us to the tune of £25 (or more) then we have 40 beautiful hand coloured prints on offer of the original mural design - a perfect way to show your support for how we remember icons in Bristol.

Screen printed then individually hand finished by the artists, the pieces were produced as part of a limited Edition of 100 prints of the official DJ Derek Memorial Wall based on Richmond Road, Bristol painted by Sepr, Deams, 45RPM and Piro. All prints are signed and numbered by the artists.

With thanks to Jo Garland of Jacknife for providing paper, ink and the screen printing equipment for this project.

Stay tuned for further authenticated prints and works that will celebrate the new mural if we are successful too.

The team

We will work with local artists and the wider community to create the mural. PRSC has been a hub for diverse creators and new collaborations since incorporation, and this ode to a Bristol favourite will be no different.
