More Rewards Coming Soon!
An update for Empower Youth Voices
Jun 2 2017
Happy Friday everyone!
I hope you're all doing well.
It is just over two weeks since the Empower Youth Voices campaign ended! Can you believe it? I've already started putting some of your money to good use, as it contributed to the venue hire for this month's poetry night and the filming costs. Look out for the video very soon on our YouTube channel - I've just watched it and I really like it.
For those of you who have not received your rewards yet, I haven't forgotten you. I will be in touch and they will be coming soon. For those of you who chose the Poetic Thank You, I think you're going to love your collection of poems.
Enjoy the rest of your day and have a lovely weekend.

Moulding clay & sing song
An update for A safe haven for refugee and asylum seeking children
Jun 2 2017
The attraction of moulding clay inside didn't last long today and most of the children were soon out in the Project’s garden. There they can splash about a bit, roll a tyre down the sloop, dig in the earth for a glimpse of worms or jump from one low platform to another. Even better if they can persuade one of the staff to fly them across the platforms – “my turn” seems to be one of the first English phrases many of them learn and other words soon follow.
Persuading them to wear sun hats isn’t easy but if one of the older children can be persuaded then the rest are more likely to follow suit. Newer arrivals often start by playing on their own but those who have been there longer sometimes take it on themselves to make sure that the new ones don’t remain isolated and international friendships soon become apparent – an especially welcome sight taking into account recent events.
A song to begin snack time, complete with a rhythmic table tapping, helps to ensure a regular eating routine – hand washing, song singing, eating of fruit and bread and then, only after eating is over, a return to play. Then more singing before the mothers arrive and the session ends –
“One little man in a flying saucer
Flew round the world one day
He looked left and right
Didn’t like the sight
And one man flew away – whoosh!”

We're on the radio!
An update for A safe haven for refugee and asylum seeking children
May 31 2017
A huge thanks to everyone that has backed our campaign so far! We have 148 backers and have raised £5,864, but with 20 days remaining we still need to raise over £14,000 more to keep the Early Years Project services going. Please do help us share this campaign and thanks for all you've done already - we really do appreciate it.
Today our very own Tom Daly and a BRR member from our VOICE project will be appearing on the Women's Outlook show on Ujima Radio 98fm at 13.00 to talk about the Early Years Project. Please do tune in and hear how vital this service is to refugee families in Bristol.

Crowdfunder Update
An update for TERN: Supporting Refugee Entrepreneurs
May 30 2017
THANK YOU to everyone who donated so far! We’re now over 35% towards our target of £20.000 which will be a huge help in allowing us to deliver our next programme for 25 entrepreneurial refugees this Autumn!
Your support will have an enormous impact on entrepreneurial refugees’ lives. By starting their own businesses, they are allowed to utilise their existing skills and experiences while becoming active members of their local communities. We wouldn’t be able to deliver our programme without people like you supporting us.
Read on to find more about the first episode in our #ThisRefugeeCan series, how we are planning to ampliyfy our message (and how you can help) and how to reclaim rewards.
1. Introducing: Gulwali Passarlay
The first video in our #ThisRefugeeCan series focused on author and political activist Gulwali Passarlay. Gulwali is a great example of the driven, ambitious and talented refugees that we work with at TERN. You can see more about Gulwali’s story and his hopes for the future in this video, the first in our 4 part #ThisRefugeeCan series.
2. Thunderclap Campaign
We want to spread the message of this campaign as far and wide as possible, to do this we have launched a Thunderclap campaign. This allows us to magnify and amplify our core message across our collective networks, meaning rather than just reaching those who already support us we can reach 1000s who have never heard of TERN, or even the concept of refugee entrepreneurs.
Joining our Thunderclap campign takes 15 seconds, and cost nothing, but will have a huge impact in spreading our message that this is no limit on what #ThisRefugeeCan achieve. To do so just follow this link: bit.ly/thunderclaprefugee.
3. Crowdfunder News
If you claimed a reward when kindly donating, we will be in touch at the end of the campaign with further information on how to reclaim it. Don't worry we take care of everything!
Finally, if you have friends or family that have yet to donate, fear not! We have extended our crowdfunding campaign until 12th June, so they can still be part of our movement.
Thanks again, we couldn't do this without you.

An update on Majid
An update for Syrian refugee Majid needs to learn English and dreams of becoming an Engineer
May 29 2017
Dear all,
Thank you so much for your donations to Majid's fundsurfer page. I thought it was high time I sent out an update.
With the money we have recieved so far, Majid had completed three months at the language school. He is taking a break for the month of May and is starting again on June 5th. His English is improving all the time and he is very popular at the school. They have even gone so far as to offer him one month free which will make our donations go further.
He has a long road ahead and it is not easy for him. But he has been so overwhelmed that people have backed him and he is very grateful, as am I.
We are currently exploring options for scholarships at Bristol university and we are definitely getting a step closer to getting him where we wants to be.
If you would like more specific information or you want to know more about a larger project we are working on that will give others the opportunity that you have all given to Majid then please get in touch.
All the best,
Celine

Contactless giving is here
An update for Safer off the Streets - Help Bristol's homeless night shelters
May 27 2017
Hi everyone,
I am so pleased to be able to share some news which you may have already seen on social media or the news. This week we launched two new contactless donation points in Broadmead, marking a new approach to supporting homeless people in Bristol. The project has been possible with thanks to the Broadmead Business Improvement District (BID) who are supporting SOS Bristol by donating the use of these podiums for the campaign.
You will now be able to ‘touch’ your bank card to give £2 direct to the #SOSBristol fundraising campaign. There is nothing else (that we are aware of) like this in Bristol. This will make donating easier for everyone who may not carry small change but who feel compelled to take action to support people they see rough sleeping. It is simple, immediate and will directly pay for bed spaces across Bristol’s homeless night shelters.
We hope that you think they are a good idea. Please do us a favour and visit St Mungo’s Facebook page to share the information that is available on this with your friends. This is a new and innovative way to support the campaign and we are so pleased to offer it as another way to directly help homeless people be safer off the streets.
You are a fantastic city Bristol!
With thanks
SOS Bristol

Sunshine & delight
An update for A safe haven for refugee and asylum seeking children
May 25 2017
The sun shone on BRR’s little garden today and the children rushed outside to make the most of it. Difficult for members of staff to say thank you when presented with a plucked flower whilst simultaneously discouraging the three year old from picking any more!
It’s always heartening to see a newcomer to the Early Years Project moving from shyness, even fear, to growing self confidence. Today two year old, Sayed, pulled out the box of wooden rails and worked out for himself how they joined together; then grinned with delight as he moved a train and its magnetically linked trucks over its little bridge.
There was a fire drill this morning and the children were quickly and efficiently swept up and moved out. To most of them it was an additional moment of excitement; only one boy burst into tears and he was soon reassured by spotting his mum with the rest of BRR members and volunteers in the assembly point in the car park.
