An update for My trip to Calais - donations for food for refugees

    Nov 6 2019

Thank you all so much for you donations last year, the trip was a huge success! The janitorial supplies we took over lasted them for months! With the supplies and the work we did while we were out there we were able to help hundreds of refugees living in appalling conditions in the absolutely freezing weather.

It was such an eye opener to to witness both the plight of the refugees but also the incredible amount of support, solidarity and love given by all the volunteer organisations operating out there on the ground. Refugee Community Kitchen is a truly amazing organisation, not only producing over 2000 free hot meals a day for refugees in camps and on the streets but also providing them with bags of fire wood every day as well as tents, sleeping bags and clothing.

It went so well last time and we were so inspired by what we saw that we're going out again to take out suppliers and help in the kitchen and warehouse in a couple of weeks. This time I'm taking 3 friends form school to help out too.

We have a new fund raising page to raise money for our travel and accommodation expenses here. Any additional funds raised will go directly to RCK for them to purchase more life saving suppliers for refugees in France this winter.

Please donate a few pounds if you can!

    Thank you so much!

An update for Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival Needs You

    Oct 21 2019

    Dear Pledgers,

We can't thank you enough for your generous support as well as truly believing in our festival and what it brings to Bristol. Since launching our crowdfunder we've been working hard to secure the festival for the future, not only with your financial support but through fundraising concerts, approaching other fundraising bodies and targeting company sponsorship. We've also restructured everything we do to ensure we can move forward for the years to come, while still providing the same level of music that we all know and love.

Your generous donations have now meant that we have been able to secure next years festival and be able to contract musicians, secure venues and put an exciting music programme together for 2020 and deliver it to the same standard that you know us for.

To show our appreciation we'd love to invite you for a drink and canapés at Bambalan on Thursday 7th November from 7pm - 8pm where we will also be announcing next years programme. Following the official launch we have an open event to the public that will feature funk master Dennis Rollins supported by some of Bristol's finest musicians including James Morton, Denny Illett, Ian Matthews and Jonny Henderson.

If you are intending to come to the official launch at 7.00pm please email nigel@bristoljazzandbluesfest.com to confirm your attendance, for the music performance starting at 8pm we've asked that the general public apply for tickets so if there's anyone who you are inviting for this part of the evening, then please get them to sign up for tickets so we have an idea of numbers (links below).

By now most of you should have received your perks however I know there is a few people waiting on the music classes and masterclass which is currently getting sorted by our Artistic Director. If for some reason you haven't received a certain perk and its been over a month since you donated please contact leon@bristoljazzandbluesfest.com so we can chase it up.

  • A Massive Heartfelt Thank You to Denise and Vincent Daly, family and friends for raising £1945.00 for the Sleep Pod Project.

An update for Sleep Pod Fundraising Campaign

    Oct 20 2019

Sleep Pod relies heavily on the generosity of others who share the same vision to help protect rough sleepers and refugees by keeping them warm, dry and safe.

Justin a founder of the Sleep Pod Project had the pleasure of meeting Denise Daly and Vincent Daly. He was truly inspired by your family for hosting the Sleep Pod fundraising event. The Sleep Pod Team were really moved by how you held the Sleep Pod Fundraiser in memory of your son Tomas. Denise Daly shares her story:

"We were enthused by the concept of sleep pods and how it could save lives. We regularly give to people living on the streets but felt what we were doing was inadequate and when we saw the sleep pods we realised this was a way we could help more practically and make a difference.

Our motivation was our son Tomas who always went out of his way to help rough sleepers through donations from his pay and also directly by chatting to them, being interested in their lives. Sadly we lost him last year but this motivated us to carry on the work he had started. Some of Toms friends were keen to get involved and supported us from the start.

We raised the money by holding a tea party in our home - we invited friends and family and asked them to donate. We were amazed by how many people wanted to come. Over 70 people attended. We held an auction, a raffle and had face painting and a drawing competition for the children. All our friends and family donated food and raffle prizes and items for the auction. It was a wonderful day - a real team effort.

Our advice would be - just do it!!"

"Latest wonderful news on the sleep pods fundraiser. We had a very generous donation from a local business man and his amazing daughter who knew Tom and wanted to contribute Thanks to their kindness the amount we all raised is now £1945. Xxx"

A Massive Heartfelt Thank You to Denise and Vincent Daly, friends and family who have raised £1,945.00 for the Sleep Pod Project. You and your family and friends have helped protect 78 rough sleepers on the street, keeping them warm and dry.

We are so inspired by your drive and determination to help the Sleep Pod Project. Thank you so much for your kindness.

    Love The Sleep Pod Team

  • Streets to Kitchen: Chapter 2!

An update for Better Food's Streets to Kitchen Campaign

    Oct 18 2019

    Hello!

Last year you generously donated to the Streets to Kitchen project and helped us to raise over £10,000 to kick-start a year-long cookery course for people affected by homelessness in Bristol.

The good news is that the first year of the Streets to Kitchen course continues to go from strength to strength. Each week, a small group of clients is welcomed to the St. Mungo's Recovery College kitchen to socialise, share and be inspired with healthy, affordable recipes, gaining skills and confidence as they go.

In fact, the course has been so successful that everyone involved - Better Food, St. Mungo's and Square Food Foundation who deliver the course - are determined to see it continue! Better Food is committing to raise more money, term by term, because we've seen that there's more work to be done with existing clients, more clients coming forward to take part, and more possibilities for the future of the classes than ever imagined.

And it seems that the clients agree! You can read course updates here, and here are just a few of our favourite bits of feedback from the classes so far:

“I like the way we do things together, even clearing up! It’s like a little family and that means a lot to me.”

“I’ve lost all my confidence but I can be in charge of cooking the rice, and it’s a privilege to share my culture with you.”

“I feel better than I did this morning, because I’m here. Being here has improved my headspace”

“My experience at the class has been exemplary, it has benefited me in ways I would not have imagined, self-improvement, team-work, happiness and achievement. I am so very grateful to both the facilitators of the group and to all St. Mungo’s staff for being so welcoming and hospitable with such great sense of humour!”

    “Those flapjacks were life-changing!”

Thank you for making this happen.

It's this sort of encouragement that has inspired us to reboot the fundraising campaign for Streets to Kitchen. We honestly couldn't have done it without your support. As we go into our second year, please help us spread the word so we can keep the project on the road and help more people learn new skills, make new friends and find confidence through food.

You can read about and support the new campaign here.

Love from the Better Food team

  • An amazing start!

An update for The Layers' album

    Oct 17 2019

To all our backers so far, thank you! With your help, we're over a quarter of the way to our target already.

As well as the pledges, it's been wonderful to receive so many kind and encouraging words.

We've received our first request for a cover version, we're going to keep it a secret for now but let's say that you prog fans are going to want to pledge for the special edition!

To everyone who's been involved so far, thank you so much. Please, please, continue to share the campaign. We're back in the studio later this month and we're going to try to treat you to a little video update.

    Big love from The Layers.

  • Special Thanks to the Tame Valley Scouts of Birmingham

An update for Sleep Pod Fundraising Campaign

    Sep 25 2019

Celebrating our first Scouts Sleep Pod build:

A huge thank you to the Tame Valley Scouts of Birmingham who were the first scout group ever to take part in a Sleep Pod build on the weekend of the 7th-8th September 2019. The Sleep Pod build team mostly came from the Tame Valley Scouts of Birmingham, ranging from 10 - 74yrs. This proves that anyone can help make Sleep Pods and help to reduce deaths due to hypothermia and exposure whilst sleeping on the street without adequate protection. The scouts, explorers and leaders from Tame Valley and Sutton Coldfield spent 15 hours building 140 Sleep Pods which will go out to give homeless people a warm and dry place to spend the night. The scouts did a fantastic job, sharing their professionalism, respect, attention to detail and dedication to a good cause.

Anyone - no matter where they are based can get involved and we are keen to talk to groups and individuals who want to partner and support the work we do.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this amazing project possible.

Special thanks to Pam Salloway - thank you to you and your family and Scout group. You really did a great job and should be very proud of yourselves. The Sleep Pod can not do the work that we do with out the support of people that look just like you !!!

Love the Sleep Pod Team - For dreams of a better future
