  • Bristol Homeless Action Week final update

An update for Bristol Homeless Action Week

    May 20 2019

    Hi all

Just a quick final update to say so many thanks for pledging to the campaign.  Although we didn't get to our initial target the amount we raised meant that we could make the week a fantastic success.  It has proved to be a real template for an even more successful event next year.

So many thanks again - your contributions were really appreciated!

I will be in touch shortly regarding the rewards

    All the very best

    Ken and the organising team

  • Beira Crisis Latest Update

An update for Beira Cyclone Crisis and Sustainability Campaign

    May 1 2019

Thanks for your support, sadly we have bad news in terms of the situation on the ground being worsened after another Cyclone hit, just weeks after the first. We are thinking of those hit by Cyclone Kenneth and the Bristol Link with Beira team are working closely with people on the ground to support the rebuilding of the City.

Could you please share the crowdfunding project with your network via social media and email, every share helps to spread the word and we need urgent support.

On Sunday a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was appealing for "additional resources" from the international community "to fund the response in the immediate, medium and long term".

You can share this info -

Beira, Mozambique was directly hit by Cyclone Idai causing 90% destruction to the city. Our appeal is to help rebuild the city sustainably and directly

The death toll from Cyclone Kenneth in cyclone-hit northern Mozambique has risen to 38, officials say, as aid workers struggle to reach the worst-affected areas. Cyclone Kenneth struck the southern African nation last week with winds of 220km/h (140mph), flattening villages and damaging thousands more homes. The storm lost strength, but torrential rain and high winds were still battering the area on Monday. As a result, flights have been grounded - hindering the aid effort. It is predicted the weather system will dump twice as much rainfall as Cyclone Idai when it struck last month, leaving more than 900 dead across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The flood risk was compounded by Kenneth hitting at the end of the rainy season when river levels were already high, the UN's Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) noted. Already, Pemba, the regional capital of Cabo Delgado state, has experienced more than 2m (6.5ft) of rain and flooding.

    What's the latest?

According to Mozambique's National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), 38 people have been killed by Cyclone Kenneth, while another 35,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged. The privately-owned O Pais website reported five people died after part of a rubbish dump collapsed onto homes in Pemba on Sunday evening. It is unclear if these deaths are recorded in the government total. Ocha says humanitarian needs "have sky-rocketed, and the humanitarian response will need to rapidly scale-up". Some 200,000 are in danger in Pemba alone, Ocha warned. Spokesman Saviano Abreu added that the situation in the northern towns of Macomia and Quissanga was critical, while there were also worries for the cut-off island of Ibo. But attempts to reach those areas had not been entirely successful. "We managed to send one flight with World Food Programme (WFP) supplies of rice and biscuits, and some non-food items," Mr Abreu told news agency AFP. "But unfortunately the weather conditions are changing too fast and threatening the operation. It's raining again and the second flight couldn't go."

An update for Bristol Refugee Rights Advice Service

    Mar 29 2019

Thanks to your support the advice service at BRR will not be closing but it will be changing to run on a smaller budget.  In April the days and ways of working for the Advice team will be changing.  The rationale and principles of the changes include:

Protection needs: sharing information about asylum processes, preparing people for what may happen next, advice which empowers people to navigate the asylum system.

Early Action methods: assess current asylum situation and advice needs as early as possible, and take action to meet these/ ensure they are met.

    Safety and preventing destitution.

What we'll do: needs assessments, relevant casework, 4 - 5 assessments per week by appointment and follow up appointments for further, all advice and casework for asylum support money and housing, National Referral Mechanism referrals, complex referrals which require case work, Exceptional Case Funding applications, Social Service Community Care Assessment referrals and a bit more  . .

The Friday morning drop in at Malcolm X Community Centre will change.  The new Friday service will offer information sessions on topics such as Your Rights and the Law, Racism and speaking out, Employability & careers, Drug and alcohol - County Lines, at St Paul's Learning Centre.

An update for Beira Cyclone Crisis and Sustainability Campaign

    Mar 28 2019

We have been working hard with our local partners on the ground in Beira, ADEL all week.

We have committed this morning to an initial strategy of helping supply resources through our appeal to Public Health and Education. Including water purification kits and materials to rebuild our parter schools.

All our money well go directly to Beira through our partner ADEL and through pre approved joint budgets. We also got confirmation that ADEL have got a partnership with an International Agency to help with short term food and water relief which wasn't getting to them. We are also helping to make sure that relief resources get to the communities we work with.

Please keep supporting our campaign so we can keep supporting the communities in Beira. We are

An update for Beira Cyclone Crisis and Sustainability Campaign

    Mar 24 2019

We have been in contact with the Mayor of Beira, Daviz Simango throughout the last few days he is working hard on the ground in Beira and feedback to us on the situation. Also we have been in contact with the lead of our parter organisation in Beira, ADEL and we are finding out the needs of the areas .

With both of them as well as with people across both cities we are working on a strategy to help the city directly with money we raise. Also we will be visiting Beira to access the damage and work with key stakeholders to work on a long term plan for the city.

However we need to keep raising money to support the long term development of the city of Beira. Please help in any way you can, especially keep sharing our link and news. We will make further updates as news comes in.

Also we promise to send impact reports on our projects to donors so you can know where the money is being spend.

    Thank you once again.

An update for Beira Cyclone Crisis and Sustainability Campaign

    Mar 21 2019

Hi everyone, thanks for your pledge and support, it means a lot. The BLB team have made contact with the Mayor of Beira, he said that they are facing 'total devastation' and 'will have to begin again' Incredibly he also asked how Bristol was doing! We are coordinating efforts from Bristol and need any support possible, it would be amazing if you could share the project with your friends and family, as well as any companies who would want to donate or help.

Our team are working on a number of urgent funding areas including looking at emergency aid, reconstruction funding, impact investment sources and corporate partners.

Everything helps, so thanks for donating. We will post more updates as we get them.
